Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Nowadays, children who have ears that stick out too much tend to get them treated on the health service. Some would say they deserve to do so. Anyone who has suffered ridicule in the school playground ( or at work for that matter) knows how this can affect ones life.
If surgery as a child passed you by, you will be pleased to know that it’s a very simple procedure to get them corrected. We see may men who feel that they have to have a long hairstyle to cover up their ears, not easy when short hairstyles have been the order of the day.
Before the operation
A consultation will be arranged for you with our Plastic Surgeon. This will be your opportunity to ask those important questions and decide if ear reshaping is right for you. The consultation will last about half an hour to an hour. The Surgeon will explain the procedure in detail and tell you the pros and cons of this operation.
The procedure
Usually, an ear correction is done under local anesthetic, often with a little sedation to make you relaxed. Of course, it can be performed under general anesthetic if you prefer. If you have a local anesthetic you are normally discharged later the same day.
In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision behind the ear in the natural crease. He removes skin and cartilage to bring the ear back to a normal position.
The area is then sutured afterwards and the Surgeon applies a head bandage to protect the ears and keep them in the new position.
You will then be taken back to your private room to recover.
After the procedure
Your ears will feel sore afterwards. This is perfectly normal. Medication will be prescribed to help with any discomfort.
Plan to take about ten to fourteen days off work. Avoid sporting activity for around six weeks afterwards.
When the bandage has been removed you should see ears that are now in the ” normal” position. Now its time to think about that hairstyle you have promised yourself for years !
