Dental Implants
Dental implants have become hugely popular for men in recent years. Men have known for a long time that a dazzling smile is a very attractive thing to own and with modern dentistry able to crate wonder smiles, it is within the reacjh of everyone. However, what can you do if you dont have the teeth in the first place ?. Well, if the thought of dentures leaves you running for the hills, then dental implants could be the thing for you.
Dental implants replace missing teeth. You dont remove them every night, they are there all of the time, looking like and behaving like your own teeth.
Lets see what happens when you have dental implants
Before the procedure
Ita all starts with a consultation and an examination by our dental specialist. He will want to examine your mouth and assess what treatment is required to bring you that glorious smile back once again. As part of this assessment he will probably ask for special X-rays , called panoramic X-rays so that he can assess the quality of your bone and the other teeth. At the end of his assessment you will have a comprehensive treatment plan detailing a step by step guide as to how your new smile will be created. Some treatments take a little time to complete, so you may have to be Patient to get the sile you want. What is for sure, is that it will be well worth the wait.
The Procedure
Dental implants are usually placed under local anaesthetic and sedation. This means you will feel very sleepy but not be totally asleep. If you prefer to have a general anaesthetic , this can also be arranged.
A dental implant is a titanium post which is put into the jawbone. If you can imagine that this implant is the root of your old tooth, you have generally got the idea.
A number of implants can be placed at one time if more are required.
The type of implant used will depend on which the Dental specialist feels is most appopriate in your case. For example, in some cases there is insufficient bone to place the implant at all. In these cases we have the very latest in dental implants available called ZYGOMATIC implants. These are used where there is insufficient bone on the upper jaw.
Following the placing of the implants , sometime will need to elapse before the final crown , or tooth, can be positioned. This is because we need time for the dental implant to settle in place before the tooth is loaded on top.
The new tooth is made of procelain and is matched to the colour of the remaining teeth , to look natural and to blend in. These are custom made for you in a dental laboratory.
After the procedure
You should expect some swelling and a sore mouth in the days that follow your dental implant treatment. This should quickly settle in prepareation for your new teeth at the appropriate time.
