Q: And how is it removed?
After 6-7 months, the balloon is deflated by extracting the saline and then removed usually through the nose. The following video provides a useful illustration of the process.
The operation is usually performed under sedation. This means that you are not totally asleep but you feel very relaxed and it is unlikely that you will remember anything about the procedure itself. The whole thing takes around one hour to perform.
Using an instrument called a gastrocscope, the Surgeon places a silicone sack into the stomach through the mouth and then it is filled with sterile saline. The gastroscope is removed when the balloon is in place and you will be taken back to your room to recover. Usually you will be allowed home later the same day.
