Before the Gastric Band procedure

A consultation with a gastric Surgeon is the first place to start. This consultation is really important because it could shape up the rest of your life , for the better. At the consultation the Surgeon will go through your medical history and assess you for the gastric band procedure. He may also discuss other weight loss procedures with you, so that you have a complete understanding of what is available to you. At the end of that consultation you will have all of the information you need to come to a decision about the procedure.

The Gastric Band Procedure

The procedure itself is performed under general anesthetic, so it is painless. The operation is done laparascopically, this means only tiny puncture wounds are used to place the band. The band is placed at the top part of the stomach, this makes it an hour glass shape. When it is nicely in position the wounds are sutured and you will be taken back to your room to recover. You will be kept in hospital overnight.

After the Gastric Band procedure

Now the procedure is over your ” new stomach” will function slightly differently than before. the top part of your stomach is now the size of a golf ball. The lower part of the stomach is now situated below the band. The golf ball sized pouch at the top can now only store small amounts of food.  Because the upper part of the stomach controls the flow of food into the lower part of the stomach, you will feel fuller quicker and for longer.

You will follow a dietary regime after the operation which is supported by our team of Dieticians. It is important to stick to the plan or you may feel sick if too much food and drink is attempted at once. It is important to chew your food well after the band has been fitted.

The great thing about the band is that it can be adjusted. The Surgeon can control the amount of food in the upper part of the stomach by adding more or less saline to the band to allow more or less food pass through. Refilling of the band is carried out over a period of time as your progress is monitored.

Having a gastric band does not mean that you cannot enjoy food anymore. You will need to think about what you are eating and plan your meals carefully.
