Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the world today and is very popular with our male Patients.

Liposuction can be performed virtually anywhere on the body where excess fat is a problem. For most men the most common area that always merits a mention first is the stomach. It doesn’t matter if its a the ” beer belly” or just the ravages of time that have expanded your waist line, the problem is always the same, how to deal with the expanded waistline.

Remember though that liposuction is not an excuse to go out and eat and drink whatever you want afterwards. You will still have to exercise some control over your diet , otherwise you will undo the results of your procedure.

Perhaps the great thing about Liposuction is that none of your friends are likely to know that you have had it done. You can easily disguise the early bruising and swelling under your clothes, at least until you are confident enough to take off that shirt and reval your new look to the world !!

Lets take a look at what really happens

Before the procedure

You will need to book a consultation with one of our Plastic Surgeons. This will give you the opportunity to find out all about liposuction, and more specifically what can be done for you. Consultations are free , so you have nothing to lose ( except fat of course )

The Surgeon will examine you and tell you all about the procedure, the good and the bad. So at the end of it all you will have all of the facts you need on which to make a decision.

Consultations usually last about half an hour to an hour.

The procedure

This procedure can be done under local or general anesthetic. This is something that you will discuss with your Surgeon and the Anesthetist. Very small areas, for example the chin, are usually done under local anesthetic.

Modern Liposuction equipment enables the Surgeon to have more control over the amount of fat that is removed and the precise location. The emphasis on the procedure is not just about removing fat, but creating a more pleasing shape , with an even result as possible.

The Surgeon does this by removing fat using an instrument called a cannula which is attached to special suction machine. This removes the excess fat from the area to be treated. The fat is removed through very small incisions in the area to be treated.

The amount of fat to be removed varies enormously from Patient to Patient and the areas being treated. It is not uncommon for two to four litres of fat to be removed in one procedure. Of course, the priority is always safety and in very big cases, two procedures may be required to complete the treatment, and in cases where multiple areas require treating. Your Surgeon will advice you of this at the consultation.

When the procedure is complete you will rest in your private room and discharged either later the same day or on the following day, again depending on the amount of surgery undertaken.

After the procedure

You should expect some swelling and bruising after your liposuction. This is completely normal and varies from Patient to Patient. It is difficult to say exactly how much you will bruise, but generally speaking the more treatment undertaken the more we would expect you to bruise. You will feel sore too.

Your Surgeon will prescribe medication afterwards and this will help with the swelling and discomfort.

You will also realise that you are tightly wrapped in a special garment which is designed to minimise the swelling and help with skin retraction afterwards. This special garment is worn day and night at first and its important that you stick to the plan !. You can take it off to shower and then replace it afterwards.

Arrange a week to two weeks of work. You will need to rest after the procedure, but not retire to your bed. Gradually the bruising and swelling settles down and you can return to normal activities after about two weeks.

If you are into sports or the gym, then allow up to six weeks for things to settle before you attempt any strenuous exercise. Don’t be tempted to do much too quickly.

It can take up to one year for the optimum results to materialise. You will see subtle changes for some time after the procedure. Remember to watch that diet ( and your beer intake !) and you will keep the great results you achieved after the operation.

You will have a series of check ups afterwards with your Surgeon, he is also going to want to see how you are progressing.
