Facelift

In these modern times, it is not only women that are enjoying the benefits of a facelift. More and more men are opting for facelifts to roll back the years. Its generally accepted that a facelift gives one of the most striking results in cosmetic surgery. It can literally take years off you. A good facelift will still look natural however, and not an over operated look seen in some celebrities.

It can be carried out together with a blepharoplasty to correct hooding of the upper eyes, or bagginess of the lower eyes.

An investment in a facelift is a good thing if you want to turn back the clock a few years and have the benefit of it for years to come. But remember, that you cannot stop the ageing process and as the years roll by you will still develop a few wrinkles.

Before the Facelift

A consultation with a Plastic Surgeon is essential before you embark on facelift surgery. The Surgeon will want to consider your face as a whole. For example, do your eyes need considering as part of the procedure, if you have baggy eyes these could look worse after the facelift has tightened your jaw and neck line. Sometimes a brow lift can be done to elevate the loose skin on the forehead (although Botox has reduced the number of brow lifts done these days).

The consultation will be free of charge and will last around one hour. You should be well prepared for your consultation and its often a good idea to write those questions about your potential facelift down, that way you wont forget to ask any of them..

The Facelift procedure.

Facelifts are usually performed under general anesthetic. However, some minor lifts are performed under local anesthetic with sedation. Your Plastic Surgeon will be able to give you more details about the most appropriate anesthetic for you at your consultation.

There are a number of options available to the Surgeon in terms of face-lifting techniques. For most people it is the neck and jaw line that they are most concerned about , as it is this area that is most ageing. Surgery in this case has a focus of removing the excess skin on the neck and jaw line to create much more definition in this area and at the same time removing deep wrinkles on the cheek areas.

The Surgeon uses very carefully placed incisions to remove excess skin, and tighten muscles, it is not just about removing skin. If the neck area has excess fat this can be removed at the same time. The incisions are usually around the ear and in the hairline. This is of particular consideration for men , especially if you like to wear your hair very short.

When the muscles have been tightened and the excess skin has been taken away, the surgeon closes these areas with sutures. The procedure can last anywhere between two and five hours, depending on other additional procedures incorporated into the basic facelift.

After the procedure you will be taken back to your private room to recover.

After the procedure

Following a facelift you should expect some bruising and swelling to the face, neck and eye areas if a blepharoplasty has been carried out at the same time. This can take two weeks to settle, but up to six weeks to settle completely. The first two weeks are the worst in terms of how things look post operatively, and you will want to arrange two weeks off work.

The wound areas will feel sore at first and you will be given medication to help with this. Sutures are removed ten to fourteen days later on advice of the Surgeon.

There is no doubt that your facelift will take a little getting used to at first. Many men are amazed at the difference this procedure has made to their appearance. It literally takes years off you.

The Surgeon will want to see you for follow up check ups afterwards to make sure that all is settling well.
